Preventing Transformer Outages at a
Steel Mill While performing
routine infrared thermography inspections on a
13.8kV step down transformer Skip Young of Gerdau
Ameristeel in Calvert City, Kentucky also takes
along his SDT170 and parabolic dish. Skip knows that
advanced electrical faults produce heat but early
stages of corona and tracking discharge are best
detected acoustically. In this presentation Skip
shares his infrared images, which showed no faults,
and his ultrasound recordings, which revealed both
corona and tracking problems. Left alone these early
stage faults would lead to transformer failure;
possibly before the next infrared scan. Instead,
simple maintenance will keep this equipment in
service.
